When Should You Consider Anxiety Counselling?

Anxiety-Counselling

After a long day, if you ever find yourself typing “counselling near me” in the search bar, chances are that you actually need what you’re looking for. The good thing is that you have already taken a useful step by asking the question.

Signs That Point Towards Anxiety Counselling

Here are the signs I listen for:

  • Your mind races at night and sleep suffers
  • You feel tension in your chest, shoulders or stomach with no clear cause
  • You avoid places, people or tasks because they set off worry
  • You replay conversations for hours and expect the worst outcome
  • Friends and family have listened kindly, yet the worry stays put

One sign alone does not mean you need anxiety counselling. A few of them together, over a period of weeks, suggest that a conversation with a professional could help.

When Life Events Stir Things Up

Anxiety often follows change or loss. In my practice, I see stress and anxiety alongside work pressure, bereavement, divorce, difficult family dynamics and shaky confidence. Life transitions bring their own strain too, even the welcome ones.

You may continue doing everything that needs to be done while feeling increasingly disconnected from yourself. Some people describe this as feeling exhausted or jaded with life. They may know that something needs to change without knowing where to begin.

Counselling can provide time to stop and look at what is happening. That space can be useful when you spend most of your time responding to everyone and everything around you.

Your Usual Ways Of Coping Are No Longer Enough

Most of us develop ways of dealing with difficult situations. Sometimes those methods work well. At other times, they can become less helpful. You may distract yourself when you feel anxious. You may keep busy so that you do not have to think about something. You might avoid certain situations altogether.

These responses can provide temporary relief. However, if the underlying concern remains, the same anxiety may keep returning. This is one reason people begin looking for “counselling near me”.

During my free initial 30-minute telephone consultation, you can ask questions about anxiety counselling and my approach. I can also ask some background questions to understand what has brought you to therapy. We can then consider whether working together feels appropriate.

Should You Wait Until It Gets Worse?

You can start at any point. Some people come to me in the middle of a crisis. Others arrive because life looks fine on paper and they feel worn out from holding worry together. Early conversations usually mean less to untangle later, though I also welcome people who have coped alone for years.

My Approach To Anxiety Counselling

I use an integrative approach in my work. This means I draw on several therapeutic approaches, including psychology, cognitive behavioural theory, psychodynamics, person-centred and transpersonal approaches. I can also use techniques such as visualisation and sand tray work when they are appropriate for the individual.

You do not have to carry anxiety by yourself. Book your free 30-minute initial consultation with Penny Glazebrook Counselling through this website, and we can talk about what you need.
