Co-Dependency What Is It?. Library Image: Doorway of Hope

Co-Dependency Issues

Throughout my years of practice I have become aware that many of my client's issues have been connected to various co-dependencies born out of childhood scripts and learned behaviours that shaped their fundamental attitude towards life and others. Broadly speaking, co-dependency can best be described as very powerful driving forces that control our everyday lives with adverse effects.

Do you feel anxiety or panicked in stressful situations?

Does your marriage or relationship take up your thoughts and energy? Are you unhappy but feel unable to leave?

Do you feel bullied or antagonised by a certain person in your place of work to the extent that you are concerned?

Do you turn to alcohol or substances on a regular basis to ease away your anxieties?

Do you feel that there are no alternatives and you are trapped in a cycle of unhappiness?

Do you people please to appease situations to your own detriment?

Do you place unrealistic expectations upon yourself and others?

If you answered yes to any of the above, you may be co-dependent. You may believe that your happiness solely depends upon another person, a relationship, job identity, material goods or acting in certain ways that do not reflect your true identity. You may feel powerless to assert your true feelings and/or opinions when it counts. This can create anxiety and depression that can overshadow your life in general. Consequently, your overall confidence and emotional health could be at risk. The thinking and behaviour generally focuses on certain people and ensuing situations that you can’t control. This is codependency. You react to something external, rather than your own internal cues.

To help identify your co-dependent root causes, I combine supportive counselling with Psychodynamics and Cognitive Behavioural Techniques to redefine and offer alternative ways of thinking, this will help to offset and manage any anxieties that you may be currently experiencing. I can help you in the future to express who you truly are with emotional confidence, clarity and decisiveness that will enable you to forge ahead with renewed vitality and self assuredness.
